This misconception may stem from the dish’s characteristic white sauce. Over time, the recipe has evolved to incorporate ingredients such as milk, cream, and cheese. 

Pasta Carbonara is a dish steeped in history, with tantalizing roots that date back to 1937. It was in that year that Ippolito Cavalcanti penned a Neapolitan cookbook called “Cucina Teorico Pratica,” where he introduced the dish as “alla carbonara,” translating to “coal-worker’s style.” This name hints at a fascinating theory suggesting the recipe was born among coal miners.

While some tales attribute its creation to an American soldier in the 1940s, others argue that its true origins lie in the heart of Rome, Italy. No matter who the original creator was, there’s no denying that Pasta Carbonara has charmed its way into the hearts of food lovers around the globe, becoming a beloved staple in kitchens everywhere. 

When preparing pasta, follow the instructions on the package for cooking spaghetti, or feel free to explore other types of pasta, such as fettuccine or capellini. For the sauce, all-purpose cream is the preferred choice; however, table cream or heavy whipping cream can be used as alternatives if all-purpose cream is unavailable. The quantity of bacon used in the recipe can be adjusted based on personal preference; a balanced amount is recommended, but you can modify it to suit your taste.

  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 6 ounces chopped bacon
  • 1 can (4 ounces) sliced button mushrooms
  • Half cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 (21-ounce) container heavy cream (or all-purpose cream)
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • Salt, to taste (optional, since the Knorr beef cube already adds saltiness)
  • Water (enough to cook the pasta according to package instructions) (approximately 3 quarts)
  • To prepare the dish, start by bringing a large cooking pot of water to a boil. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, add salt and spaghetti, cooking it according to the instructions on the package. After the spaghetti is cooked to your desired firmness, carefully extract it from the boiling water and set it aside.
  • Next, heat another pot or a pan and add bacon to it. Cook the bacon until it becomes crispy, allowing the fat to render in the process. 
  • After the bacon reaches a crispy texture, remove it from the pot and place it on a clean plate or bowl. It’s important to discard the excess fat released by the bacon but retain about 3-4 tablespoons in the pot as it will be used for the sauce preparation.
  • In the remaining bacon fat, add minced garlic and sauté until it turns golden brown. Following this, add mushrooms to the pot and continue cooking for an additional 45 seconds to enhance their flavor.
  • To prepare the Carbonara sauce, incorporate the crushed Knorr Beef Cube into the mixture while stirring continuously. Subsequently, add the all-purpose cream to the pot and continue stirring for an additional 5 to 6 minutes.
  • Next, include the Parmesan cheese and half of the previously cooked bacon into the pot, stirring until the sauce attains a smooth consistency. 
  • In a separate large pot, evenly distribute the cooked pasta, then pour the prepared Carbonara sauce over the pasta. Sprinkle a portion of the bacon and chopped parsley on top. Thoroughly mix the ingredients until they are well blended.
  • Once all components are evenly combined, transfer the mixture to a serving plate. Finally, garnish the dish with additional Parmesan cheese, bacon, and chopped parsley to enhance its presentation.
